BioThis is the journal of my life before, after and most importantly during my Bonderman Travel Fellowship from the University of Washington, Seattle. It's still very early on so we'll see how this evolves as a document of my wandering.
I can say that while on the road, it will likely be updated sporadically, and that while I absolutely love and welcome comments and friending, I may be unable to respond in any fashion - timely or otherwise - and am somewhat weary of keeping a friends page (I already have a personal LJ for that purpose I've used since 2001).
"The Empire Of The Ants" is a short story by HG Wells. I keep a massive hardback of his short fiction as my bathroom doorstop. I went ages without actually opening it; I really only bought it for the perfectly worn, beautifully designed dust jacket. But the story hit me because it seems to fit what I, on some level, hope to find while on the road: wild places where humanity is not the landscape's focus, the feeling of dread and anticipation that is the unknown, and the so very overwhelming size of the world left unexplored to each and every one of us. The title (in a perversion of Well's notion of alien, unknown, inhuman insects) also makes me think of so many of the great cities I hope to visit while I travel, and my deep belief that humanity isn't so special; that we are just another set of protein strains and semi-aware neurons - we just happen to build up towers and see them fall. The Empire Of The Ants is both the alien and foreign spaces that we fear and cannot control, and the teeming hovels and boisterous concrete jungles we make home.
Right now as I write this, though, I just hope I don't get Malaria...
